Video Researcher / Journalist

Pin-Africa is an online news channel for people interested in the African narrative. Our editorial ethos is ‘Pinning African narratives through video’, so video plays an important role in how we convey the stories we wish to tell.
We have been around since early 2017 and have been making noise in the space of Africa-focused journalism for a while now. As a result, our growing network is giving us access to many opportunities to create many engaging news stories. So, we are offering internships!
We are looking for a curious, detail-oriented Video Researcher/journalist to do in-depth research and copyediting on a variety of subjects to help our Video Producers make awesome video content.
The ideal candidate will be able to research and organize information on any topic. You are comfortable in an autonomous environment and will see an assignment from start to finish, no matter how large or small the task.

Responsibilities:
  • Must do quick, in-depth research on a variety of subjects
  • Will proactively find themes that fit Pin Africa’s voice and package them to be ready for video
  • Will write and shape copy for videos, as well as conduct necessary fact-checking and copyediting
  • Will help condense sometimes difficult concepts into useable information for Video Producers
  • Will act as an informational resource for Video Producers

Skills & Experience:

  • An insatiable passion and curiosity for research and Africa in general
  • Strong writing and editorial voice to help shape concepts
  • Must be a grammar nerd
  • Strong attention to detail – nothing slips past you
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced work environment, in small teams or independently
  • Ability to prioritize and juggle a multitude of tasks
  • A quick learner, comfortable adapting to sudden changes
  • A passion for creative storytelling and digital media
  • Extremely comfortable searching with Google and using Google docs
  •  Good at identifying and incorporating online trends
The internship will be for three months minimum (from when you start) and will involve opportunities to network with some influential people on the African continent; be involved in the process of making compelling stories through video; possibly travel, to cover conferences or story opportunities.
The internship is also unpaid, so we are looking for individuals who have a lot of passion for Africa and the process of representing the positive changes happening on the continent.

Video Editor

Video Editors are an integral part of the Pin Africa team. We are looking for people who have excellent creative and communication skills, and with the urge to expand their experience in short-form video. The ability to be a team player and have a positive attitude is a must.

The right candidate possesses a strong eye for design, style, a good sense of story, and the technical skills to work efficiently.

Content will include website videos, social media videos, original series, special features, and branded collaborations. We work in a very fast-paced environment and this role requires someone with excellent time management and multi-tasking skills.

Responsibilities:

  • Work with Producers to create dynamic short-form nonfiction videos in a timely manner
  • Responsible for post-production processes from editing line cuts to finishing videos, including color correction and audio
  • Keep up a positive and flexible attitude in a challenging and ever-changing media environment
  • Follow established workflows and guidelines in terms of template usage, media management and general organization and processes

Social Media Producer

Pin-Africa is offering internships for a Social Media Manager, a Video Producer, a Video Editor and two Researchers. If you have a passion for Africa and are interested in journalism, and politics, then we want to hear from you.

We’re looking for a social media intern to help our Marketing Manager manage our social media accounts by implementing strategies and tactics that grow our followers, engage and retain them. You should have command of best practices and trends in social media marketing, enjoy being creative, and understand how to both build and convert a digital audience. We are looking for someone that will work with us for 3 months’ minimum.

This role would suit a motivated individual, complemented with good organisational skills, ability to set priorities, be flexible and adaptable in a fast-changing environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Help grow the company’s social media profiles and presence, including Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn, YouTube and any additional channels that may be deemed relevant.
  • Create shareable content appropriate for specific networks to spread both our brand and our content
  • Build creative campaigns focused on the various events that we may attend
  • Stay up to date with the latest news and events about Africa, as well as the evolving digital landscape
  • Attend and help document/capture content from events or various projects and collaborations.

Essentials

  • Proficient in English (must be able to proofread copy destined for public consumption)
  • Proven ability to grow a brand’s social media presence
  • Attention to detail and a flair for all things creative
  • Passion to constantly scour the web for inspiration (for creative content) to help bring fresh ideas to the table.
  • Proficient use of Adobe Premiere Pro & Adobe Illustrator (Desirable)
